July’s profiled student is Anneke van den Broek, who attends our Saturday morning dynamic classes. Yogi, mum and entrepreneur, Anneke finds yoga helps her balance family life, a thriving business and provides much needed ‘me time’.
Anneke’s yoga practise grew out of her love for dance. A regular at The Sydney Dance Company’s casual classes, Anneke enjoyed the yoga inspired stretch classes up until the birth of her first baby.
“After that, I tried a number of different yoga studio’s until I found Adore,” Anneke explains. “I appreciate the quality of the team at Adore, the small classes and the focus on getting the postures right”.
When asked why she loves her yoga classes, Anneke doesn’t hesitate. “I love the challenge, the focus and the effects of Yoga which for me are like ‘moving meditation’ and the time to be with myself”.
That me-time is especially precious when you have two small children and run a rapidly growing small business. While Saxon (aged 2yrs) and Saskia (4yrs) undoubtedly come first these days, Anneke admits that they are not her only ‘children’.
“My first born is a chocolate Siamese, Kiska, and second born is a lilac point Siamese, Mischa,” Anneke smiles. Her love for her pets was the inspiration behind, Rufus & Coco, a boutique business offering a range of natural products for companion animals.
“Frustrated by the lack of natural alternatives for pets with conditions such as arthritis and the overall lack of good looking products to buy for my own pets, I decided it was time to take action!” explains Anneke. “I combine my passion for animals and a background in senior marketing and general management to fill the industry gap.”
There’s not much downtime when you’re running a small business and looking after young children. Is yoga the key to finding balance in a busy life?
“Yoga helps to ground and centre me for the benefit of all no doubt!” answers Anneke. “Let’s be honest, starting the business from scratch whilst having two kids has been a ‘journey’. However, Rufus & Coco fulfils my love of a learning and offers a sizeable challenge and allows me to be master of my own destiny.”
Rufus & Coco products can be seen in Woolworths nationally, plus select pet stores and veterinary clinics and online at www.rufusandcoco.com.au.
