Student of the Month
This month’s profiled student is Sue Moore, a long-time Adore student who has used yoga to help her through some challenging times and continue her extraordinary and inspiring work.
Adore Yoga: What first brought you to yoga?
Sue Moore: I was on the receiving end of a Breast Cancer diagnosis a couple of years ago. My Naturopath suggested that I do yoga as an adjunct to the treatment processes I was about to embark on.
AY: How was yoga helpful for you during the treatment process?
SM: In the early days the breathing and relaxation techniques helped me to manage anxiety. Since then yoga has helped me to re-gain and maintain flexibility especially in the period post-surgery. Now I am fully recovered I do yoga to maintain flexibility and general well-being and because I enjoy it!
AY: After your remarkable recovery, you chose to move your life in a new direction. Can you tell me about that?
SM: Yes, (and some think I’m mad!) but I have just embarked on a fast-track Bachelor of Nursing. I think I have always wanted to do it but I just got side-tracked! The opportunity came my way, the kids are grown and at this point in my life I believe I am well-placed to be able to give something back.
AY: As well as studying, you’ve been working closely with the local Tibetan community.
SM: I am a mentor for the Tibetan Community in NSW. There are about 400 Tibetans currently living on the Northern Beaches mainly around Dee Why.
As a mentor I support a newly-arrived family to find their way around. This includes helping them with English, navigating Centrelink and finding accommodation. In return I have learnt much about life in Tibet, its ancient culture but, most importantly, just how difficult it is for new arrivals to our country, especially when English is not your first language.
A quick plug ! The Community is currently planning their Annual Festival of Tibet. Each year they have a raffle which in turn, funds some of the work we do with new-arrivals. if anyone in the Adore Yoga community could help out by donating a prize for this raffle it would be so very much appreciated.
AY: Hopefully your yoga practice helps to keep you relaxed and focused in the midst of a busy schedule. What do you like best about yoga?
SM: The feeling of well-being you have after attending a class...and the fact that just about anyone can do it – with the right instruction of course! I love the personalised, friendly, small-groups settings that is Adore Yoga.Thankyou Nikola, Brooke, Kimberly and the rest of the team.
Adore Yoga will be donating a 10 week yoga course to the Annual Festival of Tibet raffle.
