Workshop Description

How do you adapt your teaching to help students with cancer?

With over a third of your local community experiencing, or at risk of experiencing cancer, learning how to adapt yoga techniques to help cancer patients is a critical skill.

One in three women and a half of all men in Australia are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 (Cancer Council Australia figures). Studies have shown that yoga can improve quality of life for cancer patients, but as Dr. Karen Mustain, an oncologist who conducted a 2010 study into yoga for cancer, points out, “not all yoga programs may necessarily have the same effect as those that the study discovered.” So what is the best way to teach yoga to students with cancer?

In this compelling workshop where you will learn vital practical skills to help you improve the quality of life for cancer patients in your community, including:

  • How yoga can support students during cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery
  • Looking at cancer through the lenses of Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda
  • Asana and breathing practices for students at all stages of cancer
  • Meditation for healing
  • Fundamental communication skills for working with cancer patients

Yoga is an important and effective support for students with cancer. Here's what Rose, a young breast cancer survivor, has to day about how yoga helped her through her journey with cancer:

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39 with a 1 year old and a 3 year old it was a real shock. I contacted Adore yoga after reading about their pink yoga program. I started a private yoga program which was tailored to my needs before surgery, during chemo and radiotherapy. I really appreciated the understanding that Nikola had of cancer treatment which allowed my yoga to be adjusted to suit my energy levels and overall feelings at different stages. Yoga was a significant contributor (and continues to be) to my recovery. I credit yoga and Adore with arming me with techniques to manage the stress of diagnosis and ongoing fear of recurrence, as well as continuing to build up my energy levels and feel physically stronger each day. I cannot speak highly enough of the amazing contribution that Nikola and Adore has made to my life and the many women who have benefited from pink yoga. I now continue to enjoy a regular yoga class with Adore and look forward to it each week."
Rosie, Mosman NSW
