Workshop Description

How do you adapt your teaching to help students with eating disorders?

Join this LIVE ONLINE workshop and develop practical skills to work with students with eating disorders.

Nearly one million Australians suffer from an eating disorder. Around 9% of adolescent girls have, or have had, an eating disorder. Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating, can have devastating effects on the people living with the condition as well as their close family and friends. A 2012 study found that 1800 Australians had died from an eating disorder in that year – higher than the annual road toll.

Yoga can help, and there are some encouraging research findings that show us how. This workshop will introduce you to the theory, philosophy and practice of teaching yoga to students with eating disorders. We take an evidence-based approach that builds on academic studies and experience in the field to offer approaches and techniques that will help you support students with eating disorders on the road to recovery.

This compelling workshop is designed by experienced yoga therapists and mental health professionals who have developed a number of yoga programs for students with eating disorders,  including a program for adolescents with eating disorders at Westmead Children's Hospital.  You will learn practical skills to support students with eating disorders, including:

  • Seeing eating disorders through the lens of Yoga Therapy
  • Adapting practices to meet the needs of students with eating disorders
  • Simple practices for physical, mental and emotional healing
  • Planning and languaging a class for students with eating disorders
  • Working with adolescents
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Self care skills

Who's going?

This workshop is designed for certified yoga teachers who would like an introduction to the philosophy and techniques of teaching therapeutic yoga to students with eating disorders. Qualified yoga teachers attending this workshop will receive a certificate that can be used to earn CPD points from Yoga Australia.
