I've got just the gift you need right now. It's going to help you experience optimism, joy and all round 'zing' as we move into the new year.
But firstly, how're you feeling about 2023? It's a weird one, isn't it? After having the rug pulled out from under our feet in recent years, it's hard to approach the new year with whole-hearted optimism. Who knows what's coming next?
But that has ALWAYS been the case. Sogyal Rinpoche said "Tomorrow or the next life – which comes first, we never know." The point here is that we have NEVER known what to expect. So why does it feel so hard to stay optimistic right now? And what can we do about it?
There's a very good reason why we see danger and uncertainty all around. As humans, we are actually hard wired to look for the negative. It's a handy survival technique that has evolved over millenia - you really want to know where the dangers are lurking to keep yourself and your family safe. But this radar for the negative can be problematic.
In modern humans, the evlolutionary advantage of noticing the negative quickly becomes a burden if we don't actively step back and look at the WHOLE picture. Sure there are dangers and stressors in the world. But that's never the whole story.
The trick to seeing the bigger picture - and positively influencing the world around us - is to stay open hearted in the face of uncertainty. That's difficult when we are bombarded by conflicting thoughts, fear and overwhelm (and I'm oh-so-familiar with that!) The antidote to this is peace. Peace of mind, peace in the body, peace in our environment. And peace (like love) is an inside job. When we take active steps to cultivate peace within, we can share that peace with those around us.
